PASSIVE VOICE (FORMATION)

VERB IN PASSIVE VOICE
VERB “TO BE” + PAST PARTICIPLE OF THE MAIN VERB
E.g. The letter was written by Mary
E.g. The letter is being written by Mary

VERB “TO BE”
SIMPLE PRESENT  → AM /IS /ARE
PRESENT CONTINUOUS → AM BEING/ IS BEING/ARE BEING
SIMPLE PAST → WAS/WERE
PAST CONTINUOUS → WAS BEING/ WERE BEING
PRESENT PERFECT → HAVE BEEN /HAS BEEN
FUTURE → WILL BE
AM/IS/ARE GOING TO → AM/IS/ARE/GOING TO BE
MODAL VERBS → MODAL VERB  +  BE

FROM ACTIVE TO PASSIVE
Mum is making a cake now → A cake is being made by Mum.
The police arrested the thief →The thief was arrested by the police.
Tom will open the present → The present will be opened by Tom.
The mechanic has repaired the car→ The car has been repaired.
They are going to write a short story → A short story is going to be written.
YOU MUST ANSWER THE PHONE → THE PHONE  MUST BE ANSWERED BY YOU.
MARY SENT TIM A PRESENT → TIM WAS SENT A PRESENT BY MARY / A PRESENT WAS SENT TO TIM BY MARY

PRACTICE
